At City Council in July, a Draft Plan of Subdivision (DPoS) application was adopted for the Cineplex site (1025 The Queensway). This does not affect the Cineplex’s ability to continue operating on The Queensway for the foreseeable future, as was updated in the media last year.
A DPoS application is just a technical requirement used to divide larger sites into new parcels of land, establishing new public streets, public parks, and how municipal services will be provided to support the new development blocks. Within the next few years, you may see some construction start on the 1025 The Queensway lands, but it’s a large site and we’ll all be able to continue enjoying movies at The Cineplex while that happens.
I worked with City Staff and the applicant through the Zoning Bylaw Amendment process to develop a phased approach that protects the Cineplex and provides the conditions they need to continue operating successfully in Etobicoke-Lakeshore.
The Cineplex will remain on The Queensway for a very long time. They have a recently signed long-term commercial lease at this location with options to stay in place for the next 20 years.
