Statement on Bloor St W Complete Street Extension
Throughout the campaign and during my time on City Council I have been consistent in my support of the Complete Streets Guidelines, my belief in the need for improved and connected commuter cycling infrastructure, and in my commitment to implementing relevant Vision Zero actions in our ward. These initiatives reinforce my commitment to supporting vulnerable road users, while encouraging physical activity and enhancing livability of our city.
I have heard from many of the residents of Ward 3 about the potential opportunities the Bloor St W Complete Street Extension presents. The City’s Complete Streets policy will create dedicated spaces and connected networks for pedestrians and cyclists, and will improve safety and accessibility for Torontonians of all ages & abilities.
I have also heard concern that there may be short-term challenges with traffic and congestion, and I acknowledge the impact this may have on the day-to-day experience of Etobicoke residents. As we move forward with the Bloor St W Complete Street Extension, I will work with City staff, residents, and local businesses to monitor and evaluate progress, impacts and benefits, and to make appropriate tangible improvements. Ultimately, I believe these challenges are manageable and overcoming them are necessary as we work towards meeting our TransformTO goals by 2040.
As our communities grow, we must plan for the future. I passionately believe our streets are for more than just moving along motor vehicles; they are vital community spaces where people work, play and connect with the community.
